Weather in Porto Alegre
Four seasons, a humid winter, a hot summer, and storms that mean it. Pack a coat.
Porto Alegre is the Brazilian capital that owns a winter.
The pattern
- Summer (Dec–Mar): 30–38°C, humidity, electric storms in the afternoon. AC is not a personality. It is survival in a top-floor apartment.
- Autumn: The kind one. Light, warm, and good for the waterfront.
- Winter (Jun–Aug): 5–18°C, rain, wind off the water, no central heating. Inside the concrete it can feel colder than the number. Frost happens on some July mornings. You will buy a heater and three hoodies.
- Spring: Pollen, sudden heat, sudden cold. Hay fever is not a joke here.
Rain
When it rains hard, the Dilúvio and the low streets fail. Read floods. A “normal” rain just makes the bus late.
What to pack
A real jacket. A light one is not enough in July. Linen for January. Umbrella that will die in the wind; have two. You will not “just buy it there” at 22h in a hailstorm.
The sunset
The Guaíba is west of the city. Sunset on the waterfront is the local ritual, including in July.
