Driving and getting a CNH in Porto Alegre
Este guia está disponível em inglês. As traduções estão sendo adicionadas.
Do you need a car?
No, if you live in Cidade Baixa, Bom Fim, Independência, Rio Branco, Centro, maybe Menino Deus, and you work nearby. Walk, bus, Uber.
Yes, if you live in Hípica, far Zona Sul, or you take children across the Dilúvio at 7:40.
A compact new car costs six figures in reais. Fuel in Porto Alegre sat around R$6.15/L in mid-August 2026 (ANP). Add insurance, IPVA, parking, and bodywork.
Foreign licences
If your country has an agreement with Brazil (Vienna Convention and similar), you may drive for 180 days from the date of entry with your valid licence. Carry the original. An International Driving Permit helps when a officer cannot read your card.
After 180 days, convert it at DETRAN-RS. You will need CPF, proof of address, a sworn translation if the licence is not in Portuguese, a medical exam, and a psychological test. The fee schedule on the DETRAN site lists those exams at R$90 each.
If your country has no agreement, you sit the theory and practical exams in Portuguese.
DETRAN is a building and a portal. Start before the 180 days run out.
If you learn here
Auto schools (autoescolas) sell a package: medical exam, psych test, theory, lessons, the practical. It takes months if your timetable is tight. The exam is in Portuguese.
Parking and survival
- Do not leave laptops on the seat.
- Zona azul is paid street parking. The app name changes; ask the building manager.
- Motorcycles park on pavements. Cars do not get the same treatment.
- Grêmio or Inter match days close streets around the stadiums. Check before you drive there.
Ride-hail
Uber and 99 are how you drink and how you move a suitcase. Keep the app in Portuguese so the driver gets an address that exists.
